EXCLUSIVE: Vijay Varma steps into the role of an Urdu teacher for A Suitable Boy
Descriptions
Netflix recently dropped the trailer of its much-awaited series, A Suitable Boy and we couldn’t get enough of how aesthetically appealing the trailer looked. With an enviable ensemble cast, the series is set to intrigue and captivate audiences with its beautiful storyline and Mira Nair’s spectacular vision. Supremely talented and versatile actor Vijay Varma will be seen creating his magic on-screen in the series like never before.
Vijay essays the character of Rasheed. Rasheed is an Urdu teacher and coaches Saeeda’s (Tabu) sister with the language and diction. While Rasheed seems to be romantically inclined towards Saeeda’s younger sister, he has his own set of complexities and emotions to cope with. He also forms a friendship and attachment with the young and dynamic Maan Kapoor (Ishaan Khatter). Vijay had to focus on learning and understanding Urdu in order to essay his character authentically.
Talking about his experience, Vijay said, “Rasheed is an Urdu teacher so I had to focus on pronunciations and articulation of certain words and sentences. I spent a lot of time on research, listening to Urdu audio clips and also trained with an Urdu dialect coach to really sink into the character. Urdu is a beautiful and pure language and, if not spoken correctly, won’t have that kind of an impact. Rasheed’s character is complex and layered, and he has his own journey and struggles to deal with, which are revealed through the course of the story.”
Just like any of his other characters, Vijay owned Rasheed’s character, deeply absorbing every nuance.
