10 Years of Ranveer Singh: With 2 BLOCKBUSTERS & 3 Rs. 100 crore films and an enviable fan following, the rising superstar is on the right track!
Descriptions
Exactly 10 years ago, on this day, I went to Mumbai’s Gaiety-Galaxy cinema to catch first day, third show show of Band Baaja Baaraat (2010). The first day shows are usually packed in this cinema complex. Sadly, Band Baaja Baaraat’s show was barely 20% occupied. It was also shocking, considering that audiences are more or less interested to see a Yash Raj Films (YRF) venture. The lack of excitement, hence, was visible with the occupancy. My expectations dropped. But some 3 hours later, I was glad I came to see the film. Band Baaja Baaraat turned out to be a thoroughly entertaining fare due to its script, dialogues, setting, music, Anushka Sharma and last but not the least, debutant Ranveer Singh’s stupendous performance. The trailer didn’t convey but when viewers saw the film, they realized that he’s a powerhouse of talent and here to stay.
Today, he completes 10 years in Bollywood. And as expected, he’s very much here, thriving and is also one of the potential superstars! In his decade-long career, he has worked in 12 films. 2 out of these – Padmaavat (2018) and Simmba (2018) – were blockbusters with the former being a Rs. 300 grosser and the latter earning Rs. 240.31 crore! His super-hit film Bajirao Mastani (2015) and hit films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela (2013) and Gully Boy (2019) are in the Rs. 100 crore club. Even his average flicks like Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Band Baaja Baaraat are popular and memorable even today. That both films had chartbuster songs also contribute to its popularity.
Even his endorsements have been talking points. Who can forget his Ranveer Ching avatar when he became the brand ambassador for Ching's Secret? At a time when viewers are used to seeing 30 second or 60 ads, Ranveer was seen in an ad that was also a song and he did this twice. The actor knows how to catch attention with style.
What contribute to its superb box office performance is not just his on-screen persona but also his off-screen image. After Band Baaja Baaraat, Ranveer Singh appeared on Karan Johar’s coffee show ‘Koffee With Karan’ where audiences found out that in real life, he’s a dramatic, hyper, mischievous chap. As he made more appearances on TV shows and media events, this image of his got further more popular and added to his fandom. Audiences had seen actors like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan doing masti with media and others off-screen. But Ranveer Singh was one of its kind. The way he carried himself and also his outrageous fashion sense is unlike any other actor’s style. In no time, his fan following increased considerably among the youth, both male and female. Even the journalists used to be all excited when he used to be around, giving them jappis and pappis, and no one minding it one bit!
However, Ranveer Singh is not to be mistaken to be a careless guy who is just high on success and life in general. He has a deeply sensitive side as well. This came to light when he stood rock solid with his then girlfriend and now wife, Deepika Padukone, when she was diagnosed with depression. In an interview, Ranveer revealed that he was unfazed by her condition and that he
had no qualms of waiting patiently while she took time to recover. In a society where mental health is a taboo, such a statement won hearts. Also, they worked together in 3 films and their pairing is one of the hottest at present.
In fact, the love affair also gave Ranveer Singh a boost. But again, the actor didn’t get success because of link-up reports. All his mastikhor image gets relegated to the backseat when the director says ‘Action’. The way he portrayed the various roles with panache like the thief with a heart of gold in Lootera, the intense lover in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela, the confused successor in Dil Dhadakne Do, the brave warrior and lover in Bajirao Mastani, the fanatic king in Padmaavat, the over-the-top cop in Simmba or the soft-spoken but passionate rapper in Gully Boy etc. proved his versatility. As a result, he is adored not just by masses but also classes. Critics usually find faults in commercial actors but Ranveer is an exception who has always got good marks from this section.
Even the directors have always been happy working with him. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a tough man to please, has worked with him thrice. Rohit Shetty was so happy to work with him that he signed him for his upcoming film. Zoya Akhtar has worked with him twice and has reportedly signed him for his next too.
Ranveer Singh’s future seems very exciting. His upcoming films like the cricket period drama ’83 and Rohit Shetty’s comic caper Cirkus seem potential blockbusters and are bound to be huge grossers. Even his social comedy Jayeshbhai Jordaar has already created a buzz. Apart from these films, he has reportedly also signed Zoya Akhtar’s next and also Karan Johar’s romcom, co-starring Alia Bhatt. Not to forget, he has even started his production house. It’s called Maa Kasam Films, which totally goes with his quirky image. And the banner’s name also indicates that it’ll churn out some very massy films.
To conclude, we feel that Ranveer Singh is on the right track as his ten-year-journey has been incredible. In the next ten years, he’s bound to become one of the biggest superstars. Our congratulations to this talented artist and we hope he grows from strength to strength!
